One of my favorite shows The Middle on ABC is ending.
Tuesday, May 22nd, is the very last episode. I've watched from the very beginning.
It's a hilarious TV show about the Heck family: Frankie, Mike, Axl, Sue, and Brick. It's an honest take on family life, which is what I love about it.
Here are reasons why I'll miss The Middle.
1. Mike Heck, the husband, reminds me so much of my own husband.
He rarely smiles. He doesn't get excited. Just like my husband.
This was taken on his birthday. You'd think he'd be thrilled, but no.
2. Sue Heck, the middle child, tries out for everything in high school and keeps going even when she doesn't make the teams. She started her own cheerleading team called The Wrestlerettes to cheer on the wrestling team. She never gives up. I love that.
2. Brick Heck, the youngest son, loves to read. I love to read! Books are MY best friends too.
3. I don't have much in common with Axl Heck, the eldest, since he's into sports and all of that, but he has a great sense of humor. Plus I like how he rarely had pants on when he lived at home and would constantly be sitting there in his underwear. He behaved like a typical teenager, which is how I think my daughter will be. (Only she'll wear pants.)
4. The house doesn't look immaculate.
It distracts me when homes look super clean, especially when the people complain that they don't have any money. This house is nice, but you can tell they aren't wealthy people. My home looks the same. We aren't wealthy people either. And we don't have the green walls. But there is clutter because it's Real Life. Not Instagram Life.
5. Frankie Heck, the mother, is relatable. She yells. She doesn't always understand or want to be around her kids. Sometimes she even forgets her kids. She says "I made dinner" and plucks down fast food bags on the table.
6. Brick Heck has quirks and reminds me of my son Tommy, who has autism.
Brick was never diagnosed with autism, but he has issues with social skills, is obsessed with fonts (my son has odd fascinations..he used to love power lines), whispers under his breath (and at one point, he had a tick where he'd randomly go "WHOOP"), and, AND, instead of going to his high school prom, he went to the library because he loves to read. YES! (He found a girlfriend who is also quirky. I hope my son finds someone for him as well.)
Thank you for the laughs, The Middle. I will still watch the show on re-runs. (Currently I've found it on the Hallmark channel from 8-10 central.)
Thank you for being honest. For telling it like it is.
For reminding me that it's okay to turn to a can of frosting when you've had a rough day.
I'll miss you.
It has been, as you say, a one heck of a ride.
I've never watched this show before, but i have heard people talk about it. I love that you're able to relate to this show! I'm sorry its going off air :(
ReplyDeleteI've heard great things about this show but have never watched it!
ReplyDeleteWonderful sharing! Thank you very much for this amazing article. What a good post and I love your good written I will show this to my friends. Glad that you share this
ReplyDeleteI think I would like this show. I love shows about family that are more real, like Bob's Burgers or F is for Family. I know that they are both animations but I like Fuller House as well. I also say that my books are my friends.
ReplyDeleteIf you love books & reading, you are going to love the youngest son Brick & all his passions for the written word. I am a writer & book lover and I could live in a library just like Brick wants to do. Despite his quirks which even his family finds odd, he is a lovable character and is often surprisingly genius at times to his family. I love all the book-related comments he makes. Book lovers can be themselves around a kid like him. He is one of a kind though!
DeleteI never got into this show. Maybe I should give it another try
ReplyDeleteI encourage you to definitely give it another try! Each season has episodes which relate to people of all ages. Anyone who has ever felt disappointed in life and needs a pick-me-up, a good laugh, a pep talk, or a butt kicking (metaphorically speaking), it's all there just like in real life. Except the Hecks may at times seem more extreme at times with the way they express themselves, but there is genuine maturity and natural evolution that happens as the years go on. This is the kind of show you can watch any episode & get a good laugh as well as some valuable life of hard knocks wisdom. Sometimes things are difficult for the Hecks & sometimes they get crazy good luck on their side. It is humorous yet also heart-felt and can really inspire a person to rethink their perspective on life.
DeleteI've actually never seen this show. I loved the dad when he was the janitor on Scrubs, so I need to sit down and binge!
ReplyDeleteYou will probably really enjoy his portrayal of Mike Heck. On the surface, Mike seems like a typical unemotional sports loving hardware store kind of Dad, but over time we have seen him evolve into an even better Dad who has his own special way of imparting wisdom. Every character on The Middle has very distinct personalities & so it is often surprising at times how they interact with each other. And of course, it's usually funny. We all need a good laugh now and then!
DeleteWhy have I not seen this show? Looks like so much fun! A few of my fave shows are being cancelled and I'm going to miss them.
ReplyDeleteMy husband would watch this show once in awhile. I never really got into this one. Sure there will be re-runs.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen the show, but the way you describe it I think I will need to! I will have to see if it is on Hulu or something!
ReplyDeleteI love The Middle, it is such a shame it is coming to an end, definitely gives me a laugh every time I see on TV.
ReplyDeleteI watched a couple of episodes here and there, and I enjoyed it. I need to binge the whole series.
ReplyDeleteWho doesn't love frosting on a tough day? The Heck family is great and I will miss them. BTW my husband is like Mike too.
ReplyDeleteI used to watch Malcom in the middle and thought that was a great show! I never really got the chance to watch "the middle".
ReplyDeleteI believe I watched a couple of episodes of this show and loved it. I love that you’re able to relate with it.
ReplyDeleteI have never watched any episode of this show. I like crime investigative stuff kind of show.
ReplyDeleteI am sad to hear that a show this good is coming to an end. This is a type of show that you will continue watching because you can relate. This is such an amazing show.
ReplyDeleteI never have watched this show. But, based on your post, it portrays a typical family and the reality. Thanks for sharing. I will check them out later.
ReplyDeleteI almost cried reading this because I love this show so much!! It always makes me crack up and then get weepy at the very end. I will be a mess during the finale.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen The Middle. But I can relate to your thoughts, there was blood, guts and carnage in the round of tv show cancellations just announced and I watched about 8 of them.
ReplyDeleteaww, I hope you enjoy the finale tonight. I've never seen it but now I can binge watch the whole thing!
ReplyDeleteWow.. I have followed this show for many years now, and have always enjoyed it. It is so relatable! I will definitely miss The Middle. It is one of the few shows that I have kept up with over the years.
ReplyDeleteI have watched this since the beginning. I need to catch up on the last few episodes (Does Sue end up with Shawn??? I need to know!!). I can't believe that it's almost over!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds a very entertaining show. I saw your husband's photo and wow, he did look so happy in that face lol.
ReplyDeleteThe middle looks like a really relatable series for families. I'll check if we have it here too and I'll try to catch up.
ReplyDeleteSo is this show about the middle child because if so its giving me Malcom and the Middle flashbacks! I am a middle child so perfect but not good if they are ending a show about middle kids again, the world needs more middle kids!
ReplyDeleteI have only seen episodes off and on through the years but I did watch the final tonight! I may have even teared up a little! It was such a funny show!
ReplyDeleteAll good reasons for liking The Middle. This show is so brilliant because it is outrageously funny at times while also being heart-felt. The characters go through real-life disappointments just as real people do, which is why I think so many people relate to them. Despite things not going right, they often come up with ingenious ways to solve their problems but usually not until they royally mess up or have some kind of mishap. This show has helped me to get through many tough days and weeks with a bowl of laughter as well as being truly inspirational at times, especially how Sue overcomes her obstacles due to her cheery optimism and the good natured Donahues. It really reminds you that although people can sometimes seem.negative or cranky, deep down they have real feelings but don't know how to express them. That is what makes the show very real and relevant to me. There is alot of unconventional wisdom in many of the episodes. It is sometimes subtle & sometimes learned through the characters as hard lessons, yet guaranteed every episode there is something crazy & funny going on. I can't say enough good things about The Middle! I recommend that anyone who hasn't seen it, it's the kind of show that once you get what it's about you will want to watch it every day! It's that good, and relevant to kids as well as adults.
ReplyDeleteIt’s too bad that they are no longer airing the middle. It always seems they get rid of the great shows for less stimulating tv
ReplyDeleteI got to watch some shows and I enjoyed them! So sad the show is not returning.
ReplyDeleteI never watched or heard about this TV show. thank you for sharing your views on this entertaining show :)
ReplyDeleteI've never seen it! Seems like an interesting show. Too bad it's canceled.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know this show is ending. I don't watch TV very often, but I've always enjoyed this one. Great characters - fun article!
ReplyDeleteThis would have been a good show for me to get caught up in. I can see why you'd miss it and now I do too, even though I've never seen it,lol.
ReplyDeleteI've never watched the middle, but that definitely is a bummer when your favorite show ends. I know I get so caught up watching a Netflix series and then I feel like I'm losing my best friend when it's over. :)
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a really cool TV show! Is it on Netflix, I love hoe your review describes it, I should check it out.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of those reality based shows that tickles our minds and makes us laugh out loud for seeing ourselves in each of its characters. I will miss them too.
ReplyDeleteI never watched this TV show. But after reading your reviews will give it a try if available on youtube.
ReplyDeleteAll good things must come to an end. I will miss their relatable personalities too!
ReplyDeleteI used to love this show. Watched first two seasons.
ReplyDeleteWe watch The Middle as the family and it will truly be missed. We have been trying to figure out what show to replace it because we rarely watch tv.
ReplyDeleteGlad you could relate, that’s what good shows are about. I didn’t really watch it. Thank you for sharing :)
