Okay, so, if you watch Rick and Morty you know that Rick went on and on about this Szechaun sauce that McDonald's released in 1998 for the film Mulan.
I had no idea this sauce existed until I saw the show. This is because I was living in Belgium in 1998. My mother was in the military so she was stationed there.
Rick was all:
And I was like, "I want to try that!" And then I thought my wish was coming true, because McDonalds announced that they were bringing the Szechuan sauce back FOR ONE DAY at select McDonalds. The ONE DAY was October 7th.
I found a McDonald's near us that would have the sauce. I was excited. Thrilled. I thought for SURE McDonald's would have enough sauces for its loyal customers. And trust me, I'm a loyal customer. I've been having birthdays there since I was FIVE!
My son even had a PLAY McDonald's since we loved it so much:
But when I pulled up at the McDonald's, there were people everywhere! Lines everywhere! It reminded me of this scene:
And looked like this:
I couldn't even get OUT of my car because there was no parking. People were making up their own parking spots. The dude in front of me suddenly stopped and got OUT of his truck in his neon Get Schwifty shirt. I was like, "WTF?" because it was in the middle of the parking lot and if I hadn't been paying attention, I'd have slammed right into the back of his truck.
In the end, we left, because I didn't think there was any way we were going to get the sauce. And I made the right choice, because I heard that some McDonald's got like 20 sauces in, if that, and they were doing a lottery system to see who got to get one.
I mean. Come on, McDonald's! You had to know this was going to be popular. Why not make more sauces? Or keep sauces aside for loyal customers such as myself? I'm old enough to know who Grimace and the Hamburglar are! Plus Mayor McCheese! If you asked any of the millennials filtering in after they made up their own parking spaces, they'd have given blank looks, I'm sure.
Look, I've gotten Mom Judged for serving McDonalds to my kids, but I don't care! I know your fries are delicious. I love biting into your Quarter Pounder with Cheeses. Your Diet Coke is the best. I've even posted photos of my kids enjoying McDonald's just to annoy the mothers who are all, "Oh-em-gee, who would feed their kids that garbage?"
Me. Me, that's who. You feed your kids kale and hide vegetables in your meat dishes. I'll give my kids fries at least once a week.
So my plea is this: bring back the Szechwan sauce for at least a month. Or a week even. I'll take a week! I'm desperate to try it.
Please? It would go perfectly with these delicious buttermilk crispy tenders!
**UPDATE**
McDonald's has released this statement on their social media accounts. It looks like I might get to try the sauce after all. I imagine they received tons of complaints and want to make it right. So thank you, McDonald's.

ReplyDeleteOmg that sauce was bomb!! Why did they have to get rid of it???
ReplyDeleteI love McDonalds and was raised eating it and turned out fine. Anyone who tells you that it’s bad or whatnot can get bent!! Lol.
This is crazy! First, I didn't know how many people besides me watched Rick and Morty. Second, I saw the episode and am surprised the sauce really existed! McDonald's is genius for capitalizing off of this!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't even aware about this sauce & now that I know, it's already too late. Plus, after reading your experience, I'm sure I wouldn't have gone with so much crowd! I really hope they bring it back for at least a month!!
ReplyDeleteHaha to be honest I dont know how to teact to your post! First of all I just cant belive that people where that crazy over a sauce at MacDonalds?? Second of all, I have never seen someone that crazy about Macdo as you are...or atleast being honest about it!

OMG I love Rick & Morty! Such a great show! So funny! Although season 3 was not as good as season 2! I have never tasted this sauce but there's so much noise made about it that really, I feel I must get my hands on it! BUt how?i They are not bringing it back to the Uk!
ReplyDeleteI never got a chance to try... I wish they try to get it back again... I love Rick and Morty!
ReplyDeleteHonestly I don't even remember this sauce. I'm amazed that people went so ga-ga over it. LOL!
ReplyDeleteI NEED this back in my life! I've missed the szechaun sauce every since they took it away. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea about McDonald's Szechuan Sauce! Now I'm uber curious so i'll have to give it a try!
ReplyDeleteI wasn’t aware of the sauce at all. Hope they get it back permanently.
ReplyDeleteHands up I haven't heard of this sauce at all, I wonder if they brought it out over here or was it a US only promotion?
ReplyDeleteI have never seen Rick and Morty!!!! Wow! I think it's crazy how amped people get over pop-culture references!
ReplyDeleteI never know about this kind of sauce, but I understand McDonald's promotional intention. They want to create a hype and they succeeded. And it works a lot.
ReplyDeleteI'm so out of the loop and never knew this sauce existed, let alone they had a day for it to return. I'm glad they are bringing it back this winter since it was clearly popular!
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha that's truly funny to me, however I really can't relate at all. Will I shock you if I say that I don't go near fast food?
ReplyDeleteWow, that's great that McDonald's is bringing it back like that. It's great that they listened to their customers. It's great that they care! As I was reading this, all I could think of was the unicorn drink at Starbucks. I was pissed...we went the day of...they were already sold out that afternoon. Did they not think it would be popular? Crazy. Anyways, glad you're gonna get your sauce! I will never get my unicorn drink!
ReplyDeleteThis story has been trending all day. Thank you for shining light on what is going on and writing with such passion. We must be informed.
ReplyDeleteI have honestly never heard of this sauce. I so want to try it now with all the fuss that everyone has been making.LOL
ReplyDeleteROFL! OMG this had me cracking up. This is the first time I have heard of this sauce not once, but TWICE in one day! What the heck! My daughter and I watched some Rick and Morty last week. She has been watching it since it first aired. For me it was a first. I had not seen this episode. Then today, my daughter ( age 22 ) yelled randomly in the car about needing this sauce. LOL Okayyyy and now this. Now I want some of this dang sauce. Geesh LOL
ReplyDeleteOMG, it just buffed me up, they should have opened the tasting at many outlets and atleast for a week. Great they got the problem and released this statement, great chance for you back!
ReplyDeletei have never heard of the sauce but it must be good. i think if they only had 20, the lottery system is the best way. that way they aren't playing favorites as they can't really do that. nobody is better than anyone else. hopefully they get a lot more and you can have it.
ReplyDeleteThe fans speak and McDonald's listens - that's the way it should be in the world of restaurants! I'm so happy that you'll now be able to enjoy your favorite sauce very soon. And I hope you won't need to stand in line and pick a number! It sounds like it was a really crazy scene at some of their locations.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha I feel like a millennial wrote the MacD apology but glad they are definitely bringing it back and I will be on the look out for it for sure.
ReplyDeleteI have never tried Szechaun Sauce but after the big hoopla surrounding it I think I need to try it when it comes back on the menu this winter! I am a HUGE McD fan!!!
ReplyDeleteSzechuan sauce is so good! I love that sauce. Very oriental in taste.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome news. I did not have the chance to try it, because I don't live in America :)) I hope they will let it be in all their restaurants over the globe so I could try it.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Can't believe Rick & Morty spawned all this drama, gas!
ReplyDeleteI had not heard about this until yesterday! What a crazy deal and boo on McDonalds -- surely they knew 20 sauces per store was far too few. Like you, McDonalds is one guilty pleasure I don't feel guilty about. :)
ReplyDeleteHey sometimes what is supposed to be a quick quirky promo gets out of hand so I wouldn't give McDonalds too much grief. Glad to see McDonalds is stepping up and doing the right thing for their customers though who clearly want to try out this sauce. I've never watched the show or had the sauce and neither particularly interest me but sound like there are a lot of people out there who do care.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry that you did not get to try the sauce! I am a huge Rick and Morty fan so I hope that they bring the sauce over to here!
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree on your plea. I guess they should give it days and not just one. A week is also good in case a month will not be given. Or maybe they are just testing the peoples reaction and response in case they really want to bring back this.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that just goes to show the power of social media! I'd never heard of this sauce before and now I desperately want to try it!
ReplyDeleteI don't remember the szechaun sauce but I would love to give it a try. The buttermilk chicken tenders are awesome. WE had some for lunch today.

ReplyDeleteLOL :) I've never tried this sauce, but did see the kafluffle caused by Rick and Morty. I hope they bring it back for you. I've heard it's good.

ReplyDeleteHey I am a millennial and I remember Ronald McDonald and all of his friends! LOL Anyways didnt know about the szechaun sauce and didnt know it was so popular. Well it was a smart marketing plan on McDonalds end, they wanted to see how much. So you will get your wish this winter and you can get it at anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteI didn't try this sauce before, but now I am curious. It must be good if it had crowds that big :)
ReplyDeleteI have not heard or tried this sauce. I do not really eat at McDonalds but this sauce does sound like something I would enjoy.
ReplyDeleteSzechaun sauce is also one of my favorite sauces. I love McDonalds too, especially their crispy fries. Enjoyed reading your post.
