Why I Don't Do "Fancy" Lunches

You see them everywhere.

Links to making lunches that will "delight" your children.

First of all, if I made a lunch like this....

....my daughter Natalie would go, "I don't like olives. Or the meat. The cheese also tastes funny to me. Also, the eyes are boring into my soul."

Now this one is cute:

But I'm not about to take the time to make the minion faces. Sometimes people seem to think that because you stay at home with the kids, that you have all this extra time to make character lunches.

I don't.

Do you want to know what my kids eat?

I know people might say, "Ew, plastic bags!" and I'm all, "I re-use them a few times."

I know people might gasp, "But that's...WHITE bread!" My kids won't eat bread with "stuff" in it.

I know people might shriek, "Carrots sticks are better than chips!" Doritos never killed anyone. The orange stuff might get every dang where, but my kids will be okay. I promise.

I know people might bellow, "Do you know how much SUGAR is in those fruit cups?" Hey. The package said 25% less sugar. So there.

I think it's amazing if you make a lunch with faces. I'll admire it. I'll praise it.

But I just won't ever do it.

  1. I admire all the creativity that goes into fancy school lunches, but "I ain't got no time for that".

  2. My child's lunches look similar. I might do something cute once in a while but not on the regular and not for school. I'm an underachiever. I am fine with that.

  3. Freaking hipsters and their lunches.
I always had a dessert too! Reese's or something comparable! I lived and I'm skinny!

  4. we don't do fancy lunches here either. the rules of what you can pack in them is SO ridiculous too at her school.

  5. It's food. It gets eaten. I don't see the point in making artwork from it.

  6. I'm far too lazy to make Minion bento boxes! Lol!

  7. I think I just gave up last year. Scarlet started buying lunch a lot.
I did cut her sandwiches into hearts a few times, but it only took a second. She thought it was fancy, which is nice. Little does she know what some people out there do!!

  8. Oh, you rock Amber! Tell 'em haters off. You know they have sweets when no one is looking!!!! I'm not into decorating my food for my kids either. They are picky enough without me having to put extra effort into it. Plus, they won't eat it if they don't like it. Period. Doesn't matter if it's shaped like a minion or not.

  9. Amen sister! Me too. I survived on bologna and tortilla chips every day, my kids should be happy they get yogurt and stuff.

  10. I love the idea of fancy lunches, but I've yet to make one...

  11. You know Jayce has autism :P So he eats the same things every week. MWF, he has a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with regular lays chips, three oreos, and grapes/blueberries. On T/TH, he eats a pizza lunchable with a banana and chocolate pudding. We don't vary :P The nice thing about Jaina being 13 is that she makes her own lunch. I have no idea what she puts in there, but I can guarantee it's not minion sandwiches :P

  12. It is way too much work to do those lunches so I wouldn't do them either!

  13. Hi,
I agree with you. As cute as they are, I grew up eating sandwiches that looked like sandwiches not minions.
Thank you for visiting my site Mostly Blogging on Saturday.

  14. Amen! I get so tired of all this stuff. It makes moms sound like mindless little robots who have nothing better to do than to devote every molecule of time to their kids. I actually have my own interests and my own life and as long as my kids are nourished, I think that's just fine.

  15. My boys got a sandwich, chips, a cookie and an apple every day for years. And they are happy and healthy!

  16. Hahahah, HECK YES. As someone who doesn't even have kids yet, I can barely manage to make my OWN lunch before I run out the door. No time for cutesy. Just GRAB AND GO!

  17. My mom would never have made us lunches with faces either and if you ask me it's kind of a waste of time. Cute for sure, but not really worth the effort.

  18. Creativity or not! For me they are only for Pinterest not real world.

  19. Totally with you. i don't do fancy lunches either. My lunches are as simple as yours. Great post.

  20. Your posts are ALWAYS on point. My kids aren't in school yet but they'll hopefully get a napkin note and be happy with it. If they'll eat it, I'll pack it, but who has time for fancy?! I work from home!

  21. Hahahaha yes!!! I don't make fancy lunches either..... Im extra bad and let my daughter buy school lunch most days depending on if she will eat whats on the menu lol....

  22. Lol, cheers to you! At least you make the lunches. I had to settle with school lunch. Keep doing you.

  23. As a mom you know what is best for your kids! I don't have kids and I hate cooking but at the end of the day whether you eat fancy food or normal, it will go inside the stomach only...lol!

  24. I do plan to do this when I have kids, as I just think it's really nice and fun and can encourage healthy eating.

  25. I salute for honesty! Even I myself can't make those cutesy lunches for myself... but sometimes spending time and effort in food preparation tells about something about that person.. I mean like here in Asia which is bento-making is quite popular, it is our form of "showing that we care" when we prepare our love ones with bento lunches.

  26. Amen...amen. amen. amen. It's insane. Now for a special occasion I get it but who has time everyday?????? Not a sane person.

  27. I think the lunches are cute, but nutrition is the most important regardless if the foods look like minions are not :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nutrition isn't the same as making food fancy though. Some fresh foods in their lunch would be much better for them than chips and prepackaged fruit.

    1. True, but my kids prefer chips. I do fresh foods once in a while, but a bag of chips a day never hurt anyone ;)

  29. I don't have kids, but I know if my mum gave me lunches with faces on when I was a kid I'd have been embarrassed and worried the other kids would laugh at me, but like you, my mum didn't have the time and I survived perfectly well on plain ham sandwiches with bag of chips anyway ;)

  30. I understand how busy it gets taking care of kids at home. If it's not practical and is just plain unnecessary, better to save the energy for more important things. :)

  31. I'm not packing lunches yet, but my kids' will end up looking like yours! It don't have the time or energy early in the mornings to be a pinterest mom.

  32. Honestly if I had kids I couldn't do fancy lunches either, I just wouldn't have the patience and it would look worse than just a sandwich and crisps.

  33. I am not "that" mom, and I dont think I ever will be. Why does it have to look cute? All they're going to do is take it apart and eat it anyways lol

  34. I remember how crazy it was preparing lunches for picky eaters! My two daughters liked totally different things, so lunchtime was always a challenge.

  35. I am picking on all these ideas for school lunches. My son just turned a year old. So a few more year to school :)

  36. I completely feel you. I would not take the time to make something super cute to see it destroyed the minute after. and what a waste of time. Sorry Pinterest!

  37. Girl! I am so there with you! My kids get what they get and they don't pitch a fit. That is the motto in our house. At least they are fed!

  38. I have tried a lot of times to be creative with food presentation and failed. SO as much as I want to do those, I just can't.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love your post. I agree with you that he most important thing is for your child to eat the food to grow stronger, and not to have just looking cute. Thanks for sharing.

  40. The reality that having a stay at home mom is busy should be known to everyone already. Making creative lunches I guess are for those kids who has no appetite and still needs some creative designs to make them eat. -ANOSA

  41. I don't make fancy lunches either for school lunch. Half of it just goes into the trash anyhow bc my kid loves to talk instead of eat. :)

  42. Fancy lunches everyday is not a possibility... but they do have to appreciate that you cook for them every day 😊
