Things I Don't Do For Back To School

Look, I don't craft.

Most of my readers know this.

So I don't do a lot of the back to school stuff that people recommend.

What am I talking about?

--Well, for starters, when I take Back To School photos, I don't have signs for my kids to hold up. You know, the ones that say "First Day of *enter grade here!* When I grow up I want to be: *insert profession here*" Don't get me wrong, they're cute, but not for me.

Wait. I lie. My daughter DID hold up a sign last year.

--I won't be making cutesy lunches. My kids get a sandwich. Chips. And a dessert. We don't stay away from Little Debbie snacks. Every kid deserves at Oatmeal Cream Pie once in a while. My kids won't ever get these lunches:

--I don't get in the Drop Off/Pick Up line. Ever. My kids walk. Our house isn't far away, they have legs, therefore, they walk. Mind you, I have to walk with Natalie because she claims she'll get "lost forever." Even though she knows exactly where our house is. But it's okay, because I need the exercise.

--I rarely put notes in lunch boxes. Some people do love notes, but I usually forget. Once I accidentally tossed the grocery list in Natalie's box. She was like, "Why did you tell me to pick up milk?"

--I don't make a special back to school breakfast because I'm half asleep and would pass out in the pancake batter if I tried. My kids get cereal. Or a Pop Tart.

I know a lot of people who DO the things I mentioned, and again, that's okay. I have super crafty friends who poke fun at me for NOT crafting. Some even promised to save me some bacon from the big Back To School breakfasts that they make. (Thanks!)

I'm just a simple person, who prefers the simple things in life.

(And guys? My kids go back to school TUESDAY! I'm going to try and not insult them by doing a happy dance.)

  1. Sometimes I wish I was crafty. I don't do a lot of those either but I do make chore charts and school schedule for my kids (well up until now my son) because he conveniently loses the schedule or "forgets" to do the chores.
The only remotely "crafty" things I do is make my own planners... because I am slightly obsessed with day planners.

  3. nope, i don't do any of those things either except walk kayla to school only because she's just 6. and i'm scared of child abduction.

  4. Right there with you on everything except the drop off line - I take the boys to school and they bus home.
I'm lucky that I even got any pictures on the first day of school - a sign would have never happened!!! And I told the boys years ago that if they want to take their lunch they can make it themselves (they usually buy school lunch).

  5. Suddenly I don't feel so bad for having cold rice and some fish that needed eating up for lunch because I just couldn't be bothered to make a salad last night!

  6. Just play the Staples commercial over and over ;). I'm with you on those things. I don't think I'll do many of those things. I've wanted to do the sign for my niece and nephew but always forget. Oh well.

  7. Every mom has their own rhythm. At the end of the day, your kids will love you just for being you.

  8. I love this post! I think it is all about doing what works for you and your family and I'm so happy to find another mom/blogger who doesn't craft.

  9. I did the sign last year and it was worth it because my daughter said "I want to be a vet and I also want to be the boss". I do the parent drop off/pick up line because we live too far to walk and she refuses to take the bus (it is a legit fear for her) and per school policy, I have no other choice.

The rest? Nope. She's lucky that I remember to pack her lunch before we walk out the door.

  10. Natalie's sign is hilarious! I do like the signs. But I am also not crafty.

  11. Hahahahaha. "They have legs, therefore they walk". Amen.

  12. I do not craft either. I can sew, but it's out of necessity to save my boys' knees when their jeans have massive holes in them or curtains to protect the neighbor's eyes.

I don't make special breakfasts on the first day of school. It's a weekday. I might make eggs or bacon on a weekend, but not on a weekday. Our daughter goes to the cafeteria for lunch. She hates cold lunch as she went to a pre-school that had hot lunches and she was hooked. The boys' preschool they had to pack and they wanted peanut butter and jelly ... every day! I have to find out if their Kindergarten is a peanut-free environment.

We do take pictures on the front stairs and the porch outside. They do not hold cutesy signs. Digital photos have a date on them, so I know what year they are from, LOL.

They take the bus. I hate drop off and pickup lines.

  14. I have big dreams about the cute sandwich art I will make, the crafts I will execute, and the frolicking I will do in the fields of live…and my reality is a total downpour of “eh maybe later” and “uhm that’s too much work.” I sleep at night knowing that it’s the thought that counts. I laughed out loud at Natalie’s sign from last year, haha!

  15. You and I seems to have a similar back to school routine, LOL!

  16. Ok, well I am laughing about the grocery list thrown into the lunchbox! Scarlet can't read yet so I can see that adding confusion.
And you mean you don't do elaborate Pikachu themed lunches??? You don't have an extra three hours in the morning???

  17. HAHAHA this whole post made me smile. I've been a working mom up until yesterday, when I finally quit my corporate job. I'm interested to see exactly how much pomp and circumstance I give my kid's 1st day of school. I have visions of glorious, angelic things right now. I'm sure that will change in a matter of seconds. Happy almost freedom day!

  19. I loved this! I wish more of my mom-friends had an attitude like yours.

(Especially about crafting. Seems like a lot of effort and time for...well, I'm not sure. Just to post a picture of the thing you made online? That's all I can think of.)

  20. High-Five, mama. I don't do those things either. I just do not have the energy! Those lunches??? OY.

    Stopping by SITS-Happy Saturday!

  21. You're my kind of mom! If you figure out a way to get the kids to do your grocery shopping for you, you may be onto something far more useful than crafting!

  22. Oatmeal cream pies are the SHIT. Will you be MY mommy?!

  23. There's nothing wrong with the simple life!

  24. Amen! I'm with you. Of course, my kids are 16-23 now so I only have two going back to school and they are old enough to roll their eyes at me if I try anything cute anyway.

A Lunchable for lunch on the first day and, if I remember, a quick snapshot. That's all I've ever done. And they still like to have a Lunchable. I think I can swing that. It lets me think they're still kids.

Enjoy your day Tuesday. I know I will!

  25. My little monsters are starting school and headstart this year.

My almost 5 year old requested to ride the bus because he's been waiting for it forever. We offered to take him but NOPE. So school bus it is!

I also had to special order his backpack from Ebay because he wanted Power Rangers Jungle Fury and nobody sells that around here.

My 3 year old was easy. She wanted Doc McStuffins. (My grandmother was going to buy her Frozen but NOPE.)

  26. I'm pretty crafty, just not at 7 in the morning. My kids are lucky they get to school on time.

  27. I say stay true to yourself! If you don't do those things, then don't feel obligated to do them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. But Natalie will most likely win "best dressed for 1st day of school", and Tommy has the sweetest backpack ever so all this other stuff doesn't matter.

  29. Guess the thing I'd try to do is take their picture on their first day of school, but wouldn't have a sign. I like the sign she held up last year ;). And srlsy, who has time to make cute lunches and write notes? LOL on the grocery list. My parents never made a big deal out of the first day of school, so I hope I won't either. Why set myself up to a standard I can't hold up for the rest of the school year?

  30. I'm with you on lunches. My kids get a sandwich and some leftover fruits and veggies from the night before. Who has time to make those themed lunches? My kids wouldn't even have time to eat one anyway!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. This showed up at the bottom of one of your posts and I had to come over to read. ;)

What are those lunches even MADE of? Stuff my boys probably wouldn't eat. So it would be adorable, a lot of work, and leave my kids starving(except for maybe my third because he eats everything). We take a pic on the first day, but nothing fancy. I do drive my kids- no one walks to our school because of the middle of nowhere, no sidewalk roads that lead to the school.
